A few excerpts from interview questions I received:

What made you choose Back To The Future for this project and why minimal?

Two reasons, Back to the Future was and always will be my favorite trilogy of films. I love sci-fi films, and the conceptual ideas behind time travel, plus I can quote all 3 movies by heart. Secondly, I wanted the series to start in 2015, the year that Marty and Doc travel into the future in the second film. We only have a few more months to make flying cars and hover boards a reality! I’ve always wanted to try my hand at Minimalist art. I love how it lets designers convey strong messages while using well thought out combinations of simple shapes. Most of my client-driven projects at Gigawatt Graphics revolve around corporate branding. I needed a fun side project and what better way to do that than to combine two of my favorite things: Art and Movie watching. It was also a great excuse to screen 3 of my favorite movies back to back all in the name of research.

How did you decide what catchphrases/quotes to use?

As the series name states, Cinema Obscura is based around obscure film quotes. I didn’t want to make a collection of the same old pop culture references, I wanted more obscure quotes that only the truest of fans would catch. I gave myself 4 rules: the posters must include an obscure quote, be crafted in a minimal fashion, have a high level of contrast, and include a prop from the movie that can be illustrated along with the copy. This last one ruled out a lot of the famous quotes, such as “make like a tree and get out of here.” I could have illustrated a leaf or a tree, but there was no direct prop from that scene.

Are you going to highlight any other films/franchises this way?

Absolutely! I plan to continue the series bi-weekly featuring other movies. Next up is The Fifth Element, and I already have plans for Pulp Fiction, Fast & Furious, The Matrix, Diehard,Indiana Jones, Shaun of the Dead, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Hackers, Ghost Busters, the list goes on and on… So keep an eye on my website or twitter @GigawattGraphic for new additions to the series!

Can you work be seen offline?

Cinema Obscura has also been on exhibit in 3 separate locations on the North Shore. First at the Ebsco Riverside Cafe Gallery in Ipswich, MA, Secondly at Cinema Salem in Salem, MA and a good chunk of the collection now resides at the Cape Ann Cinema in Gloucester,MA. I was recently interviewed by the Editor-in-chief of Package Design magazine for my latest Sweetheart product design (read the full article here). Color Your Own Sweethearts is the latest in marketing efforts to reimagine the Sweethearts brand. We wanted kids to be able to have a shareable valentine candy that they could creatively express themselves with. So I set forth on making a hand designed black and white illustration that children could color in and write a note on the back of the box to their valentine. Our youngest fans, ages 5-12, are encouraged to submit their amazing designs to our Color Your Own Sweethearts Contest for a chance at the grand prize of a $1000 scholarship and the opportunity to create a Sweethearts phrase for Valentine’s Day! You can see more of this artwork and some of last years winners here. You can find them on store shelfs right now at Target, Walgreens, Old Navy, Michaels, and your favorite local candy stores!

“I’d go so far as to call this the most edgy and fashionable Halloween candy packaging of the season…”

Jason Liebig | CollectingCandy.com

“The packaging for Mummy Hearts is fantastic and a joy to behold.   I shouldn’t be surprised at it was designed by the same guy who created their Batwing Wafers packages:Necco’s talented packaging designer Geoff Bloom.”

Jason Liebig | CollectingCandy.com

“They come in attractive mini gable boxes and for less than a dollar, I thought it was much more attractive, mature and sophisticated than the little boxes of the multi-flavor [Sweethearts].”

Cybele | CandyBlog.net

“Necco’s Hot Hearts vs Cool Hearts is a great product featuring stellar packaging design and it’s one that has me excited to see what comes next for the company.”

Jason Liebig | CollectingCandy.com

“Necco has notched up the creativity even higher for Easter by taking the color-your-own concept and pairing it up with a great set of soda-inspired flavors”

John Lucier | Senior Associate at American Capital

“I would gladly recommend Geoff Bloom for any design project. His artistic talent and software skills are expert-level, and his business acumen puts him over the top. I have hired Geoff Bloom for several different projects/clients. Of course, I like this style and aesthetic application, but what I also like about Geoff is his sense of practicality. He listens carefully, quickly grasps the project goals and needs, and hits deadlines in a timely way. I plan to hire him again if/when design needs arise. ”

Geoffrey Oldmixon | Director of Communications at Harold Grinspoon Foundation

“Geoff took my vision and made it a reality. I had worked with numerous designers prior to Geoff to try and get my vision for a logo put onto paper. Geoff was the only one who could do it. I have since hired him numerous times for other projects and I have been equally as happy. I highly recommend Geoff for any art or design work. He is extremely capable and stands by his word.”Tom Strachan | LuluLocal

Donna Bambrough | Director of Regional Marketing Programs at CSG

“I hired Geoff to create a cover for an upper-level college title. Geoff quickly understood what we wanted and presented a number of very different options. He was open to further direction and eager to get it right—not always an easy thing when you have four different entities (marketing, editorial, production, and author) to please. And yet, Geoff pulled it off. Did I mention how quickly he did so? He turned things around practically overnight. I’ve rarely had such a good experience right out of the gate! I recommend Geoff highly.”

Katey Birtcher | Freelance Client
